What is a Clinical Psychologist? . . .
Clinical Psychologists are highly trained mental health professionals with advanced expertise in the assessment, diagnosis, and psychological treatment of emotional, behavioural, and mental health conditions. Their training includes both general psychology and postgraduate clinical specialisation.
Clinical Psychologists (alongside Clinical Neuropsychologists) are the only types of psychologists typically found in psychiatric hospital settings due to their advanced training in complex mental health care.
While there are many areas of endorsement within psychology, such as educational, forensic, organisational, and health psychology, Clinical Psychologists are specifically trained to work across a wide range of psychological difficulties, often with a focus on moderate to severe or complex presentations.
It’s important to note that all registered psychologists bring valuable, specialised skills to their work. The key differences lie in the depth and focus of training, as well as the types of issues they’re best equipped to support.
What is the difference between a Clinical Psychologist and a Psychiatrist? . . .
While both Clinical Psychologists and Psychiatrists support mental health, their training and approaches are different.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have completed a medical degree followed by specialist training in psychiatry. They can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medications, and often focus on managing mental illness from a medical and biological perspective.
Clinical Psychologists are trained in psychological theory, assessment, and therapy. They complete a minimum of six years of university training, followed by two years of supervised clinical practice (known as the registrar program). Clinical Psychologists do not prescribe medication but are experts in evidence-based therapies that help people understand and manage their thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and relationships.
Often, Clinical Psychologists and Psychiatrists work together, combining therapeutic and medical approaches to best support a client’s needs.
Do I need a referral to see Gabby? . . .
No, you don’t need a referral to book a session with Gabby. You’re welcome to self-refer at any time.
However, many clients are referred by their GP under a Mental Health Care Plan, which allows you to claim a Medicare rebate of $141.85 per session, for up to 10 sessions per calendar year.
You may also be eligible to claim a rebate through your private health insurance, depending on your level of cover.
If you're unsure what's right for you, feel free to get in touch, we’re happy to guide you through your options.
